Sergio Luna presents a pictorial research on human face, focused on portrait tradition and identity matters. The people depicted on his canvases show emotions such as fear, guilt or anger but they elude explicit violence. Rather than displaying horror, they suggest hidden aggressions in an ostensible peaceful setting.

Sergio Luna’s paintings are related to cinema and primitive photography, mostly nineteenth forensic portraits. The images host odd cultural references even if they do not need to be identified. They just increased the uneasiness of those oppressive settings. Here and there you can recognize the black and white aesthetic of a Bergman’s film, or catch a glimpse from Muybridge’s crime, as uncommon as his photographic studies on
animal locomotion.

Sergio Luna arranges layer over layer of painted clothes in order to achieve impenetrable images. The cloudy surface of those canvases left you with the uncomfortable feeling that your eyes, or even your brain, are failing to see.
